Australia 2010

A circumnavigation (with risks).

Not the Birdsville Races (Again).

The second day of the Birdsville Races was cancelled because of rain which has also closed all the roads out of town. The notice being posted below reads - "Roads Out of Birdsville. ALL ROADS out of Birdsville are now CLOSED". And just in case you are unable to read (or too drunk to care) there are "Road Closed" signs and a police car on the roads leaving town.

We are told that the roads are likely to remain closed for at least three days.

There are a few people staying in the Birdsville Hotel, but most people are in tents, camper trailers or caravans. Several hundred vehicles and tents are in the official campground in town, the rest (several thousand, including us) are "wild camped" between the town and the race course.

Anticipating rain we parked on a slightly raised rocky area, but even here small puddles formed beside Man.

Those who had opted for a little shade under the trees found themselves in the mud.

Whilst many of those who had chosen to pay to camp in the official town campground fared no better.

One or two campers woke up to find they had their own private island.

Even the hotel's fork lift truck (used for moving the weekend's 60 tonnes of beer) got a little stuck.

With 4000 people stuck in Birdsville for several days the party atmosphere is being maintained with street cricket...

...several Country and Western singers...

...beer...

..Karaoke...

...dancing...

...musical talent from the crowd...

...beer...

...fancy dress...

...boxing (including a women's tag team match)...

...whip cracking (don't try this when drunk!)...

...and beer.

This afternoon (2010-09-06) the Birdsville hotel is trying to get everybody (4000?) together for a group photograph (presumably from the air!) and a human bus towing competition. (There are several Greyhound busses stranded in Birdsville).
