Askja in the Sunshine.

Yesterday I said "However as it is both foggy and raining we are going to wait till tomorrow (when it will be fine and sunny)." And it was.

There are two caldera at Askja. The "tiny" Viti (above foreground) and the massive Öskjuvatn (above left background). The last eruption here was in 1961.

Getting to the bottom of Viti can be fun and muddy, particular after heavy rain.

The main reason to get to the bottom of Viti is to swim in the mineral rich lukewarm muddy water and breath in the delightful hydrogen sulphide gas (and wonder how much warning there was in 1961 of the impending eruption).
